Technical description FTX-1 Field

With the FTX-1 Series, Yaesu introduces the long-awaited successor to a true classic: As the direct continuation of the legendary FT-817/818, the FTX-1 Series combines portable flexibility with cutting-edge SDR technology – ideal for radio amateurs seeking top performance both in the field and at home.

Both variants, the FTX-1 Field and FTX-1 Optima, cover the entire amateur radio spectrum from 160 m to 70 cm, including HF, 6 m, 2 m, and 70 cm. They support all common analog modes (FM, SSB, CW, AM) and the digital C4FM mode. A particular highlight is the true dual-band receive, which enables simultaneous reception of two C4FM signals. Automatic mode switching is handled via AMS (Automatic Mode Select).

The brilliant 4.3" full-color touchscreen display features 3D Spectrum Stream (3DSS) for real-time, three-dimensional visualization of the band activity. Users can choose between three different display modes (horizontal dual-band, vertical dual-band, or single-band) to match their operating preferences.

Inside, a powerful RF front-end with 10-band BPF filtering ensures excellent selectivity and intermodulation rejection. The radio also features dual DSP units, dedicated main and sub receivers, and a high-purity 110.592 MHz oscillator providing a high-quality sampling clock with excellent signal-to-noise characteristics for the A/D converter.

The key differences between the two models lie in their output power and integrated features:

• The Field version offers 6 W of output using the supplied lithium-ion battery, or 10 W with external DC power, making it ideal for portable operation.

• The Optima version includes a built-in 100 W power amplifier, along with an integrated automatic antenna tuner and built-in speaker, making it perfectly suited for base station use or high-performance operation in the field.

   

With dedicated accessories available for the FTX-1 Series, the system can be expanded and tailored to individual requirements. Examples include external automatic antenna tuners, active cooling modules, Bluetooth integration, a GPS antenna for APRS or satellite use, or a rugged protective frame for outdoor deployment. Battery-related and audio accessories are also available for field or stationary configurations.

Additional features and functions include:

• QMB (Quick Memory Bank) for instantly saving the current frequency and settings

• MAG (Memory Auto Grouping) for automatic sorting of memory channels by band

• PMG (Primary Memory Group) for monitoring selected priority channels (e.g., local club frequencies)

• PRESET mode optimized for FT8 operation

• QRP mode to limit power to 5 W and below

• MicroSD card slot for memory, logging, and backups

• WIRES-X compatibility (available from August 2025)

Even with simple wire antennas and portable masts, the radio delivers dependable performance – and when combined with a compact tuner, even non-resonant antennas can be used with great success.

In stationary use, the FTX-1 Optima reveals its strengths: the built-in 100 W amplifier provides solid transmit power for worldwide SSB or CW contacts. Particularly helpful is the integrated antenna tuner, which allows the use of various wire or mobile antennas without the need for complex matching networks – ideal for limited setups such as balcony, attic, or holiday home installations. The built-in speaker delivers clear audio without requiring additional external equipment, simplifying the overall setup. With the optional cooling fan, the system becomes well-suited even for extended digital sessions, such as FT8 operation or multi-hour contesting.

For digital modes or remote applications, the transceiver can be connected directly to a PC using the USB interface for CAT control and audio. An optional Bluetooth module allows wireless microphone control or connection to tablets and computers, making it ideal for clean, modern shack layouts or mobile setups. In combination with the optional GPS antenna, precise position data can be used for APRS applications or for operations that rely on accurate location tracking, such as satellite communications.
